Abstract: This book is a field test edition of the teachers guide for one unit in a series of 24 science curriculum units developed for grades 1 through 6. Each unit provides children with opportunities to learn about topics in the physical, life, and earth sciences and technology; emphasis is on direct observation and experimentation. In this unit, students in grade 4 explore the relationship between an animal and its habitat, as well as some of the ways animal behaviorists study animals. Students observe and describe structural characteristics and behaviors of the dwarf African frog, fiddler crab, and land snail, then create habitats for each animal and investigate how animals respond to changes in their habitats. The teacher's guide contains 16 activities; each plan provides an overview, objectives, background information, materials needed, preparation and procedural directions, extensions, and ways to evaluate student learning. The teacher's guide also describes post unit assessments of student progress and includes an annotated bibliography for teachers and students. (Author/KSR/LCT) |
