Nanotechnology Camp
  June 26 & 27, 2008
For students Grades 6 - 8

Facilitated and hosted by West Liberty State College SMART-Center, 1610 Warwood Avenue, Wheeling, WV 26003

The active center for science, mathematics, and research technology in the Northern Ohio Valley since 1996. A member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers since 2002

"Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications." Such phenomena include quantum confinement--which can result in different electromagnetic and optical properties of a material between nanoparticles and the bulk material; the Gibbs-Thomson effect--which is the lowering of the melting point of a material when it is nanometers in size; and such structures as carbon nanotubes.

Teaching Staff:
Robert E. Strong, Director of WLSC SMART-Center, Masters Degree in Space Studies
Libby Strong, Program Coordinator of WLSC SMART-Center, Masters Degree in Education with science emphasis
Richard J. Pollack, Asst. Program Coordinator, WLSC-SMART-Center, Director of Energy Projects

Additional instructors (high school and college education students) will be assisting with the two day camp.

Sessions:  (Day one and Day Two)     8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.     Lunch is provided daily

Site:  West Liberty State College SMART-Center (third floor of Warwood Center) 1610 Warwood Avenue

Participants: 40 students entering grades 6 through 8 may attend. The first forty completed applications will be accepted. Many activities will be in grade level groups. Please complete the application, print, and return with a check for $60.00 made out to the West Liberty State College SMART-Center.

Activities:   Grade level appropriate activites will introduce this exciting field to young scientists, including activities to model the nanoscale, molecule building, crystal lattice structures, Atomic Force Microscope simulation, nano fibers, nano tubes, nano particles, etc... Repeat of last year's successful camp, with many new activities.

Participants Costs: $60.00 is the cost of the two day camp with all materials, snacks and two lunches included in the fee.
